Hey there! This is Dr Manu, consultant Gynecologist in Chennai.

At the outset, I would like to welcome you to Dr Manu’s Gynecology Clinic. So, in this blog post we are going to discuss about fibroids and what happens if fibroids left untretaed.

What happens if you do not treat your uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are muscular tumour growths in the wall of your uterus which range from the size of a grape to some even a golf ball. They often appear in women of childbearing age. Usually these little benign tumours show no sign of symptoms and disappear on their own. But some of them cause extreme pain, and discomfort followed by severe symptoms and excessive blood loss. Fibroids can put pressure on the bladder causing frequent urination and rectal pressure; depending on their location they can also cause infertility in women.

What causes uterine fibroids?

Fibroids are very common in women in their 40s and 50s and about 2o percent to 80 percent of women develop fibroids by the time they’re 50. Fibroids usually occur when the muscle cells in the uterus multiply several times and form lumps of various shapes and sizes. Research has been carried out to determine what exactly causes these cells to multiply, but hormonal and genetic factors is shown to play an important role. The hormones oestrogen and progesterone control the growth of fibroids, during pregnancy when the hormones are high fibroids seem to grow rapidly than usual. They also stop growing and shrink after a woman reaches menopause.

Symptoms of uterine fibroids

When fibroids go untreated, they can lead to worsening of the following symptoms. Only 1 in 3 women who have fibroids experience any symptoms, if you do have any of them doctor you should consult with a doctor on what is best for uterus removal treatment.

Some of the common symptoms include: There are three types of myomectomy:

  • Heavy or painful periods
  • Lower back pain
  • Abdominal pain
  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Anaemia
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Constipation

Treatment of fibroids

Women who have severe symptoms of fibroids usually seek treatment to ease their pain and discomfort. Medication may be recommended at first, but if they prove ineffective, surgery (myomectomy or hysterectomy) and other less invasive procedures might be recommended by your doctor.

What happens if fibroids go untreated?

Untreated fibroids can cause several complications in the future. If left untreated, these fibroids continue to grow both in size and number. These tumours take over the uterus and worsen the symptoms. The pain experienced will increase. The heavy bleeding will become heavier which may lead to anaemia. The abdomen can swell increasing the size of your stomach. The fibroid put unnecessary and additional pressure on the bladder, resulting in frequent urination.

This can cause disruptions to social and professional life. The pain can prevent women from professional success and miss out on social life and events. Untreated fibroids lead to fertility issues and may even lead to infertility. This causes issues in relationships due to the symptoms and negative effects on fertility. These symptoms affect the quality of life and need to be treated as soon as possible. Fibroids get worse with time. Consult your physician today if you think you have uterine fibroids, and find out the best treatment. Procedures to remove fibroids have become much better, from open surgery to hysterectomy technological advances have introduced minimally invasive treatment options such as Uterine Fibroids Embolization which is effective and has a faster recovery time than traditional surgical methods.
