Menopause signals the end of our menstrual cycles. Menopause is usually diagnosed if you have not had any periods for a full 12-month time frame.
Menopause is a very natural process though but is generally accompanied by certain common symptoms as below

2. Hot flashes
3. Lower Energy levels
In the preceding few months or years before your cycle actually stop, you might experience a range of signs and symptoms as listed below

4. Ultrasound scans when necessary in case you have severe heavy bleeds
5. Checking your thyroid hormone levels
What if my cycles stop when I am 40?
A small proportion of patients (1%) experience menopause before 40 years of age. These patients are said to have primary ovarian insufficiency and is associated with certain unknown genetic factors. Most of the time no cause is found
For these women, hormonal therapy is usually the norm and should be recommended until the age of natural menopause.
Complications of Menopause
Menopause if left unmanaged is associated with certain complications as outlined below
A. Heart disease and elevated blood cholesterol
B. Excessive weight gain
C. Pain during sex
D. Loss of control over urine flow
E. Bones become weak and brittle (osteoporosis)
Menopause Treatment Strategies
Interestingly, treatment strategies for menopause are all aimed at relieving your signs and symptoms
1. Estrogen therapy with a very low dose and for the shortest possible period of time. This is given only after a thorough medical evaluation. Estrogen helps prevent bone loss.
2. Vaginal estrogen can improve and relieve your vaginal dryness thereby reducing pain during sex
3. Gabapentin or Clonidine, either one of these drugs can be used to relieve hot flashes if excessive
4. Calcium and Vit D3 supplementation to prevent bone loss
