Symptoms of Gynaecological Problems:

Almost every woman suffers from a gynaecological problem in her lifetime. Most of the cases are mild, but some can be severe and lead to complications, such as affecting fertility and the quality of life. However, timely doctor visits and keeping your health in check can prevent several disorders.

If you are a woman, you may wonder if you yourself have a gynaecological illness. The presence or absence of these symptoms will inform you about whether or not you have these problems:

  • Abnormal or painful periods.
  • Irregular vaginal bleeding.
  • Pelvic pain.
  • Menopause symptoms.
  • Breast pain or lumps.
  • Urinary issues.

Common Gynaecological Problems:

There are several gynaecological problems that women can suffer from. The following are the most common ones:

  • Dysmenorrhea:

Suffering from lower back pain or abdominal pain during periods is very common. But some women go through excruciating pain, interfering with their day-to-day activities. This is known as dysmenorrhea. When strong contractions occur in the uterus, the oxygen supply may go down, causing dysmenorrhea. It usually gets better as one gets older and especially after childbirth.
  • Ovarian Cysts:

Ovarian cysts come in various sizes. Sometimes women live their whole life in a healthy manner without even realizing that they have ovarian cysts. Basically, it is a sac filled with fluid that starts developing on and around the ovaries. These cysts may or may not be tumours.
  • Endometriosis:

It is a condition where the inner lining of the uterus starts growing outside the walls of the uterus. Commonly, it starts growing on the ovaries or the fallopian tube, however, it can even grow on the cervix, bladder, bowel, or rectum. Nevertheless, even today the exact cause of endometriosis is not known. The symptoms include; abdominal cramps, pain while having sex, bleeding between periods and even digestive problems.

Treatments of Gynaecological Problems:

Gynaecological problems can be painful and difficult to handle. Fortunately, there are several treatments available for them:

  • Dysmenorrhea:

Taking pain medication such as ibuprofen or paracetamol to relieve menstrual cramps and pain. Heating pads also help. Several medical procedures can also be done such as endometrial ablation (a procedure to destroy the lining of the uterus), endometrial resection (a procedure to remove the lining of the uterus) and hysterectomy (the surgical removal of the uterus).
  • Ovarian Cysts:

Usually, they dissolve on their own or your doctor may prescribe OCPs or oral contraceptive pills to help them dissolve. However, they should be monitored closely. You may need to remove a cyst that is large, that doesn’t look like a functional cyst, is growing or causes pain. Some cysts can be removed without removing the ovary (cystectomy). In some cases, the ovary with the cyst is removed (oophorectomy).
  • Endometriosis:

Pain medication and hormone therapy may ease symptoms. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or naproxen sodium (Aleve) are medications that ease painful menstrual cramps. Supplemental hormones are sometimes effective in reducing or eliminating the pain of endometriosis.

Minor surgery to remove endometriosis deposits can help with fertility problems. It can also help in cases of severe pain. If you have endometriosis and are trying to become pregnant, surgery to remove the endometriosis implants while preserving your uterus and ovaries (conservative surgery) may increase your chances of success. If you have severe pain from endometriosis, you may also benefit from surgery — however, endometriosis and pain may return.
